Be prepared to change your opinion about Portuguese wines for ever!
In 1998, "Quinta de Macedos" was bought by Paul & Philippa Reynolds. It has 7 ha of old vines planted on ancient walled terraces. These vines are rooted deep in the schistous slopes, which fall away sharply to the River Torto ("Crooked River") in the valley below.
Unlike many other vineyards, Macedos escaped the mania of wholesale replanting in the 1980's and 90's and the vineyard, in some important respects, stands as a legacy of former times and practices. It is rare and worth preserving. As such, a very high importance is put into preserving the natural state of each vine.
After all the renovations and new additions to the vineyard, the first successful harvest was in September 2000.
