Quinta de Macedos
What it says on the bottle
To fully capture the essence of this unique terroir the grapes are picked by hand in small batches and trodden in the Quinta's restored granite 'lagares' (open top treading tanks.) Naturally fermented and aged for up to 20 months in small 228 litre 'barricas' of new French 'Allier' Oak, the wine was bottled in May 2005. Our total production was 2400 bottles.

What it says on the nose
This is an enormously layered wine with overtones of almond kernel and marzipan over a vanilla base complete with chewy nougat and crème brulee. And despite the fact that the 2002 vintage is rammed with tannins and rather tight at first - it improves with oxygen.

What it says on the palate
Upon opening, this is a wine that screams 'be patient!' Certainly Quinta de Macedos is a heavyweight among wines with enormous attitude, so ideally you'd be leaving it for 3 or 4 years and then still treating it with respect by giving it a long airing.
But let's get real - this is such an exciting prospect you'll naturally want to try at least one bottle. In which case open and decant for at least 12 hours, and probably 24 hours before drinking. Do that and you'll find Quinta de Macedos joins up taste centres in your brain on a level few people have experienced.
What it says about you
This is such a special wine. Your first inclination will be to squirrel it away and drink it all by yourself over a long autumn weekend when you've lit the fire, walked the dogs, and the rain is thrashing down against the conservatory windows.
Should you choose to share it make sure you choose your company carefully - a new lover certainly, a long-standing lover on an anniversary, a very best friend most of the time, a prospective father-in-law if you need to impress.
