2006 Vintage
With the vintage over and the wines now in limbo, quietly finishing off their malolactics, it seems an appropriate time coment on this Vintage.
What worried us this year was the threat of rain.
In early August, when we started to take control samples from the vineyard, it seemed that we were in for a typically early harvest. (Our old vines ripen early!) We were getting Brix readings of 12.5-12.7. It looked like we would be picking in very early September. Then we got 33mm of rain between the 16th-18th. Although it helped to swell the fruit and lengthen the ripening period, we worried that the rains had come too early. We waited but no more rain came until the the 13th September and then only a shower.
We decided not to ride our luck any more so we started picking the next day.
Only a few days later on the 21st, the Autumn rains began.
The fruit was in great condition, althought with signs of shrivelling on some of the east facing slopes. (The direct sun exposure of these slopes will last from 6:30am until 2:30pm daily). We picked in the cool of the morning and began to fill the lagares with crushed must at 20 Celsius. Brix readings were as high as 27 in some lagares.
Fermentation was trouble free and after 10 days we racked and pressed into vat.
Early tastings show good promise, with lots of rich ripe aromas, and chewy ripe tannins, already evident.
The next development stage will be in barrel and this is typically done in early January.
We will bring you more comment on the wines at this next stage.
